Now I get full FM sound in SMS games, and I think I can use it while in MD mode also, I need to experiment a little.

How do you manage to keep leads from touching? How do you manage to solder in such close quarters? How do you mange to not destroy anything? Just, how?

How do you figure this stuff out in the first place?

For me it's all simply. I've about ~20 years of experience this kind things.

In early 90's, I successfully repare some of MD's by replacing VDP chip by 80W soldering iron. That's was cool and awesome.

Was that 80W iron shaped like a hammer ?

For me its ~13 years of experience, I remember when my father teached me how to solder and how I did my first mod (I added a LED to my Subor SB-225

)

Not quite. But you was close. %) I forging it to pyramidal profile. Very sharp edges and long enough to cover all 32 pins from one side.

I'd really just like to get a hold of a Master System that has this chip in it. I wouldn't be surprised if the board on US SMSs could have one attached, but I would have no idea how to do it. The Japanese SMS that has the Yamaha chip in it (not the Mark III, there is an actual SMS) has a different pin layout for the cartridge port. I have no intention of recollecting all Mark III games that I already own in US/UK formats.

There was very few SMS in Europe which had a YM2413 in them... its easier to buy a FM module from eviltim / viletim on SMSpower!... I got my YM2413 chip from him, very nice guy

Okay I've heard of a rumored module that will plug in to the expansion port on an SMS 1 unit. Thanks for the referral! I found eviltim's thread and the instructions, looks like a simple procedure!

I never had a hold of mastersystem, as well as compatible carts, since i'm in eastern europe that was once a part of USSR. There every conre was rules by all types NES-clones and never any mastersystem

Only mastersystem-type hardware I had was gamegear. Nice memories

About soldering: Well, guys, just get max 25W soldering iron with sharp tip (ersa iron with ersadur smd tip for example), good fine soft alloy, steady hand and patience

I can tell you that even soldering chips with 0.5mm between pins (VQ type packages) and ones with only pads below them (DFN) is a piece of cake when you get used to it.

I read your other posts here and you seem to really know your stuff

I'm right above you, in Estonia and there was indeed lot of famiclones around... we got a Master System from a Finnish guy long ago

I have a 35W iron, which is now like 15W, its so old and cools down on larger solder blobs.... but its now perfect for small electronics

That 208 pin ASIC in MD2 is piece of cake to solder if you have good tip and some nice flux around

I've done too many things to my MD2, and more to come ^^

Same here, but I've seen one in some shop sometime in the nineties. MegaDrive was kind of popular at one point though, there were even Sonic commercials on TV! So it wasn't complete domination of NES-clones here.
