Being new here, are there any major Genesis homebrew projects going on right now?

Probably the biggest going on right now is Project MD. You can find lots of good videos for it on youtube, a few early betas released you can try out, and best of all, it's open source.

Sik has done a really great job on this, although he doesn't care too much for the praise.

Oerg works on the sound/music, IIRC.
