Well It'd be interesting. Your machine(s) are heavily modified, right? If you can get something that sounds as bad as what Aamir posted, please do tell...TmEE co.(TM) wrote:Seems I've got do some hardware recording... Battletech track 12, right ?
I can tell you that it was not meant to sound like that. All GEMS stuff was created on very early model 1 consoles (it required the EXT port on the back) and that track does not sound like that on such consoles.
Given that this sound is way out of spec, its possible it sounds completely wrong on some later model console that doesnt use a real YM2612. Doesn't change the fact that it's not supposed to sound like that.
I have a sample somewhere, I'm trying to find it.
[edit]Here we go.
But, yes. There is a lot more to this bug.

My unmodded MD1 sounds same, except it has more noise because of the stonger "ladder effect".
Regen sounds way off, Fusion is not quite correct either, and Gens, well it blips Didn't try other emulators...

Hi,

Hah . Now I can safetly say that it doesn't sound weird to me without me being getting called a wierdo . Now I wonder whats causing that.TmEE co.(TM) wrote: Regen sounds way off, Fusion is not quite correct either, and Gens, well it blips Razz Didn't try other emulators...
Thats because they both are producing the detune bug. At least thats what the real thing should do. Can you also listen to ComixZone track 5 on the same machine and see if it produces this bug there as well because it uses pretty much the same settings on channel 3. Now I 100% know that comixzone shouldn't produce this thing and which will make things more interesting .TmEE co.(TM) wrote: Regen sounds way off, Fusion is not quite correct either,

Yeah, could be it. I think Battletech was only meant to be run on NTSC machines. What is interesting is that we got two samples from hardware that sounds VERY differently: could it be that one is running on a PAL Mega Drive and the other one on a NTSC Genesis ? Or could the output circuitry from one or another filters frequency in a different way ?

My MD2 was with NTSC master clock and 50Hz setting, I tried other combinations and there's no difference in sound (except speed). Also my Nomads and Christuserloeser's X'eye and Wondermega sound same (as all are MD2 basically). Unmodified MD2 that's same model as my primary use one sounds same. I'll do a recording of the MD1 aswell... and while at it, I have a SE-95 YM2612 clone chip, I've socketed my MD1s YM2612, and do a recording of that aswell then.
I'll make a record of the Comix Zone track 5... I don't recall it well anymore, but if you expect it to do the blip sound, it won't... same goes for Flashback, Bloodshot (nothing more coming to mind). The bug is very specific I think.

I think it's the early Yamaha 2612s that do sound correctly with GEMS - like Steve Snake said. The SEGA developed 2612 clones used in later MD1s and all MD2 based hardware will sound similar to what TmEE recorded.
Is that the one from the Scorpion/AITO ? I would love to hear some recordings done with this chip!TmEE co.(TM) wrote:I'll do a recording of the MD1 aswell... and while at it, I have a SE-95 YM2612 clone chip, I've socketed my MD1s YM2612, and do a recording of that aswell then.

My MD1 is the early kind without TMSS, same as what HardWareMan has, except not so modded It has regular Yamaha YM2612 chip in it...
And the SE-95 is from the AITO (which seems to have a dead functional part in it.....). SE-95 has higher output levels compared to real YM2612 and its sound seemed cleaner... I'll do some recordings soon.

Hi,

No. Its just this game. I had a PAL MD and I know that ComixZone track 5 doesn't sound like that. I also have ran ComixZone on a chinese clone MD (one with the 132-in-1 logo, there seem to be like hundred types of them ) and that sounds correct as well. So I am guessing this game is doing something different. Too bad both systems are busted now (chinese one was expected).I think it's the early Yamaha 2612s that do sound correctly with GEMS - like Steve Snake said. CCAM MD2, MD1 with YM2612 and MD1 with SE-95 clone chip... seems MD2 YM2612 implementation does sound different with BattleTech... I still prefer MD2 over anything.
