k so you have 4 colours on the image.
Image

select the colour you want to replace, with the left mouse click.
select the colour you want to replace it it with, with the right mouse click.
then hold right mouse click down, and drag over the part you want to replace.

Oh, yes. I remember doing that! I also remember thinking about it b/c I thought it made no sense. lol I mean it's an eraser... You'd think it would only erase in white... And people thought paint was a bad program, *scoff*

I also have a artist's trick that is still in beta processing. I call it 'Imitation Polygons,' and no, it actually have nothing to do with polygons, rather creating a raster texture and scaling, rotating and resizing until it looks like a wall or any other thing. Though it can get complicated when you are trying to render something that requires many texture blocks.

i understand, seems like yor doing the work of a raster engine manually.
that must take some time :D

so what do you want todo, make textures for raster/3d games?

Half and half. I also like to draw a variety of games (First person mazes, sidescrollers, that type of junk)

I have never made a real game, but I have made short move clips of the 'simulated' gameplay.

awesome. i suck at game design.

megadrive, mushroom, saturn
mmmm search the forums and other websites.
mostly done in programming languges, can take alot of work.
i saw a mushroom demo with a 3d cube somewhere. was awesome.
anycase unless someones made a raster/3d engine, it takes alot of work programming.

blender 3d
free 3d graphic software.
after some tutorials you can 3d graphics pritty easy, you can also make games.
works on windows, linux, mac, etcetra.

gamemaker (yoyogames)
its game maker with a cool script language. good to learn programming.
in gamemaker you can make a 3d raster engine, or find one someone has made.
but it is mainly for 2d games.
i know in the old one it came with some kinda doom engine demo.
for 3d stuff you may have to pay 5£$ for all the features to work.
works on windows and in a net browser aswell i think.

I should warn you that most of hobbyist devs expect that the artist is actually designer - i.e. most of the time they have very basic description for art, or no description at all, and needs the art to be both designed and implemented by the artist.

And guys, Paint is OK for start, many people started with it, but there are other tools specifically designed to work with pixel art. The Paint lacks configurable grid, palette management, layers, animation capabilities, etc. So think about it. My favorite editor is GraphicsGale (it has both free and shareware version, free version has everything you need).

True, Shiru, I understand, but I'm 15, lol
I'm going to get trained soon when I goto a game designing program at... I think it's spelled Votech?

But anyway, I have summer school, so I have to leave :(

And yes I should have the art done by today :)

OMG, it's almost done. In fact, it is done, I just want to perfect it. I'll make an account on PixelJoint and upload the picture. I might upload a few more today or tomorrow (Remastered, of course. They were the bare basics of colors and form.)

By the way, this picture is:

*100% Origrinal, it's weird, but original
*100% Sega RGB-9-Bit, with less than 64 colors on screen o.0
*100% Random. It's a really fat penguin on a stage with curtains as the backdrop.
*Color-deprived. As I mentioned, it's in Sega Genesis color, so I didn't add all of the detail I could've with 24-Bit color.

I will send the link in like ten minutes, after it is perfected. I hope it is at least... Tolerable to look at.

...And it has to await approval. Whatever. It should be finished (The approval) by tonight. I've said that before, right?

It is visible anyway. You'll have to remove non-pixel art label from preview picture, though, it will not be approved otherwise.

It is difficult to judge by just a single picture, however I can see you have some skills, but need to develop some other - better aliasing, and palette management (you don't need that many colors and shades of gray in the picture). Remember, in case with SMD you have to work with 16-color palettes most of the time, and these colors are shared between many sprites.

SOME skills is better than none, I suppose. I am constantly working to improve my artistic mind; I promise I will show 'tolerable' artwork.

And yes, palette management is important. I didn't use gray, rather shades of blue and light blue. Which areas are you talking about the gray?

And, again, yes, I should draw more... Visible art, that picture is microscopic

And do you mean the text isn't pixel art? I did use a font :( No matter, I can draw some text, of course if it's necessary...

Fail, I've read it wrong.

Yes, I will remove the non-pixel text from the preview pic.

And, I know that 16 color palettes are shared between many sprites, but I thought since I'm designing a single picture and not a game that it would be okay.

I removed the pic, I'll redraw it, and include new features...

And when you say aliasing, do you mean... It's hard to explain, but do you mean making the image less pixelized? Or do you want me to make the image less jagged? Sorry, my vocabulary is awful :/

I haven't saved the picture, but I've looked at it with graphics editor, there was ~30 colors, and half of them were shades of gray.

One of tutorials on aliasing.

I think I know why the image has more colors apart from the ones I used...
I created the image in .BMP and converted it into .PNG for the site. Could that have messed with the colors?

And I read the tutorial, but if I use that technique, the cost will be more colors (To make it smoother. I can work around this by using other colors that are similar in hue.)

You already use the technique, however, you need to improve it by making it less blurry (very common problem), and reducing amount of colors involved.

Anyway, if you want on some hobbyist game project for SMD, draw something that would show people what you capable to. Some usual game stuff, you know - think about a game genre, and make some sprites/objects. Run'n'gun, scroll shooter, RPG, etc.
