Seeking artist and possibly composer for demo

Post by Mask of Destiny » Thu Aug 14, 2014 1:14 am

I've been working on a Genesis/Megadrive demo that I'm hoping to release at Demosplash in October. One of the technical highlights is what I believe to be a novel technique for getting a linear framebuffer. It will also be the debut of a new sound driver I'm working on that supports simultaneous playback of 2 PCM channels with resampling at an output rate of ~12KHz. I was originally planning on doing a solo prod, but since there are certainly people in the community who are far better at making pixel art and chiptunes than me I figure I might as well take advantage of this new forum section and see if anyone is interested in collaborating with me on it.

While I can probably make a converter from VGM for my driver, that format isn't really a good fit for the capabilities of my driver. If I get help with the music, I'd really be looking for someone willing to learn a new custom tool. At the moment, the only tooling for my driver is a primitive text based script, but I could potentially throw together a tracker (though it may not be a particularly good one given the time constraints).

I am also a composer, in case you need help. You may want to check out my 1980s style musical project on either YouTube or SoundCloud.

Your music sounds pretty good. What would you require as far as tooling goes? At this point, having something ready for Demosplash seems unrealistic so I think I'm going to target @party 2015 (unless someone has a better suggestion) which provides plenty of time to work on tools.

Thanks.

We might try to use the Echo sound engine. It supports all three sound generators found in the Genesis (FM, DAC, and PSG) and there is a tool to convert music sequences from XM to the format used by the engine.

Another possibility is to reuse the rather simple sound engine I originally wrote for Crazy Driver. It also supports all three sound generators, but there are currently no tools for it and I had to type all notes manually in the code.

I have my own driver. It can handle FM, PSG and 2 channels of PCM with resampling and a native output frequency of 12Khz. Playback speed is in 8.8 fixed point allowing melodic PCM instruments with a reasonable range. The entire driver runs on the Z80. Currently the tooling is kind of primitive which is why I wanted to know what kind of composition tools you would prefer. I can either work on enhancing the little scripting language I've been using testing puproses, work on a tracker, or a converter from some appropriate format.

I suggest a converter whose input format is either module (MOD, S3M, IT, XM, or similar) or MIDI.

Which of those would you prefer? I'm leaning towards MIDI personally since we'll need to define instruments separately anyway, but I'm open to whatever works best for you.

It may be MIDI in case you prefer.

From my experience MIDI in awful to deal with. IT/XM/MOD and likes are much easier, especially with timing stuff.

I normally would help out, but I'm so focused on my own projects. I second what TmEE said. I recommend FastTracker2, or Milky tracker, but you're going to need samples to even work with them, or you can draw your own in the sample editor. Did someone already mention Deflemask? I didn't read the whole thread.

EDIT: Nevermind Deflemask, it looks like .vgm might be out of the question.

EDIT: Oh, demosplash is already over.

So, did you submit it? :)

I haven't really been working on it to be honest. If I had gotten more interest earlier I probably would have pushed it back onto the front burner, but by the time M-374 LX expressed interest, finishing in time for Demosplash would have been difficult. It's probably for the best anyway. It's easier for me to get to @party in person since I have some family in the Boston area and I was dealing with a personal emergency this past week that would have thrown a wrench in the works had I actually been trying to finish up for Demosplash.

Ah, I'm sorry.

If you still need a composer, ring me up sometime.

Cheers
