I believe that would be me, sometime between 2004-2006. I sent a little demo showing a couple of pictures of Zooey Deschanel to TmEE sometime in 2010. But the image in that demo wasn't stable, because it was only to show exactly how many colour writes happened per line in both modes, and I couldn't find the original code I wrote.

To be honest I thought it was fairly obvious you could do this, so didn't think it was a big deal - and (also to be honest) I didn't release a demo because I wanted to make it work in Fusion first, but I never got round to it. But it's something I always try on machines that have a blitter/dma/etc that allows you to write to the background colour. I heard (back in the early 90s) this could be done on an ST with a blitter - but I never had an ST with a blitter, so have never confirmed it.
