I like the humanized sprites and the penguin, as is. Furry characters are very nearly as cliche as anime/manga style is at this point. Your sprite art has its own style going on, maybe a bit crude but pleasing to the eye. (Not that I can do any better, mind!)

I'll just release it as downloadable content. Five bucks!Chilly Willy wrote:Perhaps you could make it selectable - humans (and penguin) or furries?
Face tests for the little girl:
I won't be using the animal sprites anymore, but I appreciate that they got me this far. When I started making character sprites I had no idea how to make them decent looking with my limited art skills. Making them animals was a useful short cut. Having them gave me a baseline to work from and how I feel I have much better sprites.

Working the cloaked man this week. Figured it might be a good idea to work on what's underneath. So far I'm going with the non-bearded bald head design, because I'm having a hard time giving him a decent haircut. And a hard time giving him facial hair that doesn't look ridiculous. Whatever I do gives him a giant head that's totally out of proportion with the rest of his body.
I'm struggling with him because he's supposed to be a bit more high class and royal. But so far my sprite designs don't exude a lot of attitude in general. They look like pretty ordinary nice people.
The pilot lady is there for comparison but I've also tried tweaking a few things about her design. Smaller boots, thinner legs, a bit more detail in the uniform.
I'll probably revert the color used for the outline of the pants. It doesn't make it pop.

And this I totally did for a laugh.

The little blonde girl and her blue penguin friend is based off my own little girl and her stuffed blue penguin. And she also has a pink penguin Look at the size of those boobs!

More work. From left to right. He's leaner, standing straight, looking cooler and less overly aggressive. The original sprite looks like he's going to flash someone.
I like these "panoramas" of the various designs. Keeps me aware of what I've tried before.

Current state of the cast:
Next to get worked on will probably be the scientist guy. He's certainly looking pretty small compared to everybody, and he's supposed to be a middle aged man.

Spent the weekend with a stomach bug and in my feverish dreams I realized that what I had in mind for a story was too ambitious. (who saw THAT one coming?) I have to constantly remind myself to keep it to the bare essentials if I want to have a realistic development time.
But on the positive side, I've been sketching out airships!

Done working on the characters for a while. Now on to airships. This one is the player's home airship. It's super blocky as it's a "draft" version. I started with a small version to get a sense of the shape and then enlarged it to get an idea of the scale. Goplanes at the bottom right, there. The shapes work out to 8x8 tiles so parts should repeat nicely.
With the increased detail, I might be able to fit in a third engine.
The cabin could use a bit of streamlining.
It might be hard to tell but the short white lines are dual anti-aircraft cannons. They'll rotate around.
That long crane thing attached to the bottom is a plane catcher/launcher. Not really realistic, but definitely cool.
