I'd just like to know...

By what method do games like OutRun, RoadRash, and Sonic Drift scroll the race track?

Sonic Drift uses palette scrolling + raster effects, Road Rash is doing software rendering mixed with raster effects. No idea about OutRun

Outrun has a static field which is line scrolled to give the appearance of a curving road. There are two roads, one on each layer. The moving horizontal stripes in the road are displayed by changing the palette, to visualize the movement.

As soon as palette scrolling was mentioned, everything clicked into place. Thanks guys!

I don't suppose anyone knows where I might find some asm examples of the things TmEE and Gigasoft mentioned do they?

A nice write-up of various games and how they do their 'road' effects can be found here:-

Everything is fully explained, so you should be able to write your own routines for your platform of choice after reading :)
