Discrepency in TMSS ROM Dumps?

Post by ArcticCircleSystem » Mon Jan 11, 2021 6:47 pm

We've been looking around and noticed that the TMSS boot ROM on No-Intro seems to only be for US Genesis consoles. The only confirmed dumps we could find are from US consoles. We've been told to ask here about all of this as y'all seem to know a lot about this stuff. We have also found a dump of the Teradrive's TMSS ROM (https://archive.org/details/tera-tmss), proving that one of the three models of the Teradrive has its own TMSS ROM (probably the same across all models but not 100% obviously).

Our question is, have the TMSS ROMs been dumped from Mega Drives from PAL regions, Japan, Brazil, and Korea? What about the Amstrad Mega PC and Mega PC Plus? ~Charlie

All the TMSS dumps I have done from various chips gave same file that already lingers on the internet. I have not had a chance to try to dump things from VA2 MD2s and I have not tried to dump Genesis3 VA2. MD2 VA4 and Genesis3 VA1 I think I have dumped but I am not sure, it has been 10 years by now lol

Pretty sure that all the Mega Drives with TMSS use the exact same ROM.

Teradrive is its own unique thing which is why it has its own firmware, in fact unlike TMSS it does a lot more of stuff since it checks what kind of cartridge it is (as there are special Teradrive-specific cartridges) and reports back what to do to the PC side.

Huh, odd. No-Intro must've just forgotten to list those dumps on their page for the ROM because they suck at dealing with BIOS ROMs for some reason. What about the Amstrad Mega PC and Mega PC Plus? ~Tammy

Amstrad uses 315-5476 ASIC which has the same TMSS in it as all the other MD2s. Teradrive is the only special one.

Huh, strange... Also oddly disappointing for some reason. ~Tammy
