Re: UMDK Manufacturing ready

The problem encountered with my UMDK builds is proper testing of the boards. Prophet and I successfully tested most features over USB but I encountered a hurdle when testing the I/O to the Genesis. For this purpose (and others purposes as well) I designed a USB Genesis cartridge reader/writer which ...

Re: Interfacing CMOS 3.3V logic

For single-direction communication, actually, isn't a voltage divider acceptable to bring a 5V signal to 3.3V using a suitable ratio? It's the single-resistor series drop that presents problems. For slow signals it's "acceptable" I guess, in high speed signals it's a bad idea. Slow slew rates are b...

Re: Interfacing CMOS 3.3V logic

11mA is a lot of current for a single pin, given that most 74HC series parts are in the 7.8mA per pin range.

As for power, it's always relative to package size. 1/4 watt is low for a light-bulb, but pretty significant for a TSOP-48 smt component.

Re: Interfacing CMOS 3.3V logic

If you're gonna use resistors you'll want some 470ohm ones, more is gonna get iffy because signal shape is gonna get poor and you may experience bad data, especially when there's more chips on those lines. And slow signal slew rate equals unnecessary power dissipation so really there's no way aroun...

3.3V Flash datasheet used in Everdrive for reference http://pdf.datasheetcatalog.com/datasheet/stmicroelectronics/9195.pdf Concretely, specifications are provided by the manufacturer for a reason - to ensure reliable system performance across ALL production units. In the case of the M29W160EB flash ...

Re: UMDK Manufacturing ready

There's a thread here http://gendev.spritesmind.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=1825 with info on manufacturing runs being organised but seems to have been derailed due to an argument of sorts (I only skim read, will catch up on it properly when I get 5 mins to myself). I had my name down on the lis...

Re: UMDK Manufacturing ready

I built a few successfully in my lab but the issue Chris and I encountered was testing. I had a few skype sessions with Chris to test the boards, everything seemed to go well save for a few tests - but then life got in the way. I hope to be able to resume my UMDK builds soon... That being said, I de...

Re: Interfacing CMOS 3.3V logic

You must use a transceiver to interface most 3.3V logic parts to 5V else you risk damaging parts in the long run. There are several Altera parts which are rated to accept 5V inputs directly (CPLDs: EPM3xxx) or indirectly (FPGAs: Cyclone II via a current limiting resistor) but there are specifics you...

Yeah it seems everyone if off doing their own thing. But it's not enough to simply do it on your own at home, you've got to make your solution available to others, provide open-source software. That way everybody starts using your solution and we slowly standardize instead of having a million differ...

If you're replacing chips on old sports carts then you'll need to make sure that whichever EPROM writer you select can support 40 pin and 42 pin memories. Furthermore, these sizes generally are UVPROM and so if you will need to re-write them a few times you will also need a UV eraser. Conversely, if...

Flashing a custom Genesis Cartridge PCB with new software

Hey guys, just wanted to show everyone a video of my MDCarts and how I write a ROM to them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEq0AQl5xTw

FYI the current cartridges specs are:
-2MBit, 4MBit, 8Mbit and 16MBit
-all 5V flash, no 3.3V non-sense
-32KB Battery-backed SRAM, or 32KB FRAM

Did you have a link for this recent reoease ? Launching homebrew with SD on dreamcast is possible since a long time. Here's an article from Retrocollect about the Dreamcast SD loader: http://www.retrocollect.com/Reviews/hardware-review-gdemu-sega-dreamcast-sd-card-iso-loading-disc-drive-replacement...
