Demo productions

Post by zinger » Tue Feb 05, 2008 7:00 pm

Is anyone interested in producing Amiga style demo productions? Is there enough knowledge yet to program interesting and impressive effects? I can't wait for some actual releases, and I'd really like to partake in some (as a music composer and sound designer).

For those who are not familiar with the demo scene, here's an example:

I thought about that and decide that there is not much to show on SMD. For example, all sorts of big and smooth scrolls which was hard to achieve on old computers (with framebuffer processed solely by CPU) will be not interesting on SMD; different vector graphics and 3D effects will be just not impressive, because we all saw that already many times on other platforms and we surely know that it's possible; and so on.

I think it's possible to show something atleast a little impressive on Genesis.

On my Atari 2600, I have some awesome demos that even on a 2600 VCS, are highly impressive.

Are you saying that there's little that is unique about the MD, Shiru? That's disappointing to hear. Well I guess there's some cinematic and aesthitic effects that could be made good use of regardless of system.

Yes, soft of. Most of 'unique' effects (which abuses unique SMD hardware features) already was used in many games, especially in Zyrinx ones.

Technically, I'm sure that SMD can run demo like shown on your link (all shown effects is doable).

There are some MD/Genesis demos up on Pouët :>
However nothing released after '96 so they might not seem very complex :D

And this one: http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=2461

Runs in 480i too on real hardware.

Yup. That's how they got the doublewide pixels for the C64 multicolor pics. Same screenmode Sonic 2 2p runs in.

I can do music in TFM /Hello Zinger :D/ and some cool pixelart pictures and logos /I have original DELUXE PAINT 2/...
Any coder here???

Why not??? I think MD/GENNY is good demo platform...

@Shiru ->
Yes on PCs are better demos... better GFX... RAM... CPU... but good stylish demo can be on old hardware too...It is not hardware thing but it is in design.

Yes, that was my point. There's been some very cool C64, Amiga, MSX etc productions lately. I think it could be at least as interesting as a new MD game. I think I'm going to try to learn some ASM...

I have my hands pretty much full with my sound engine and related, but I could try make some worth-seeing demos, I just need ideas (which I lack lately... school sucks).
