OVERDRIVE II

Post by Oerg866 » Sat Apr 15, 2017 10:18 am

Hello!

The time has finally come to announce the sequel to our first demo ("overdrive").

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWVmPtr9O0g

ROM Download
Video (twitch.tv)

Code: Select all

Tech notes:

This demo requires a flash or development cartridge with

   ■ 8 Megabytes capacity
   ■ Support for the SSF2 mapper

e.g.: TiTANDEV-MD, Mega Everdrive, ToToTek MD-Pro 64M

Due to extensive usage of a previously largely undocumented
hardware register, it will not run properly on all MD systems.

Our tests have shown that around 30% of Model I and 5% of
Model II systems experience issues. This is due to a change
in the manufacturing process of the video chip.

More detailed information will follow in the tech docs that
we'll be releasing in the coming weeks.

This demo will only run on PAL / 50 Hz systems.

At the moment, this demo will not run on ANY emulator.
Emulator developers can expect full support from us in order
to fix this (Please contact us!)

I saw it live, and all I have to say is... "fucking beautiful". Other than that, I am speechless.

Amazing demo, congratulations. Some effects are incredible.

At about 1:30 with the shoot'em up scene, how do you do the heavy rain with two other backgroun scrolls? I think that is too much to be drawn with sprites.

Simply amazing. I really hope this isn't Titan's last MegaDrive demo. I've seen the video, but for this one I'll have to dig up my PAL MD. Hopefully it will work with the clunky Neo Myth MD. I guess it's too big for the MegaCart. Not that I have a way of programming it on my current PC. One of these days I'll just get an Everdrive.

P.S. - Will this be getting a *final* release with NTSC support? I'm curious if it would run on a WonderMega.

P.P.S. - On a side-note, now that a proper flash device for the Neo Geo is out, I really hope sceners will try to tame that 2D beast. Demoscene rules so hard.

Whelp. Sat though this and watched with some friends. Will need to see on a real Mega Drive to avoid compression artefacts.

But much of what I saw? There were utterances of words too rude to say in this post. Some incredible work!

Many reject it from the size being too big. The rest have timing and display issues.

So, no emu supports it as of right now.

The only emulator I got the ROM to load in was Genesis Plus GX (by changing the header to make it detect the ROM properly >:P), but as Jorge said, there were issues with it. Graphics glitch up and the music hanged after a while. (I was surprised to see the 3D segments (like full 3D) work perfectly, though!)

Here's a video of it running on GPGX via BizHawk

Sometimes I wish the ROM was shorter so I could debug it easier!!Once again, 1 day has passed and I still have no idea how half of latest demo actually works, and I'm dying to know!
This is no less than jawbreaking. I can not fully run the ROM on here, but I seriously can not tell how many of that works from VDP side, and I don't think most of that is just about framebuffer emulation/pre-rendering... (other than 3D renderings because it have hscroll deformation at some point (?))
Holding breath for the documentation

This turned out great! Runs a little funny on my VA2 JP Model 1, as "that register" has some odd vertical lines every pixel on the very original chipset.
