Ocean Melody

Post by r57shell » Tue Feb 25, 2014 4:42 pm

It's just melody by not me.
Test it please on HW.
I wondering how it works.
Record playback if you can.

Here is Link:

Code: Select all

I don't know why url BBCODE is not working. seems because of brackets.

Thanks.

I can only test with PAL:

I also recorded a version with 60HZ mod on PAL, but it sounded the same.
The PCM samples are out of tune. This might be partially due to the VGM player code. IIRC I tested several VGM Players and version 3.2 was quite good but still a bit off. I will test it again and post the results.

So here are my results:

I created a wave file with a sine wave. The frequency of this wave was 439.56 hz, the sampling rate was 16000hz. I used this file as a sample in deflemask and compared it with an fm wave (clean sine-wave, A-7). For fusion and actual mega drive I converted the .vgm file from DefleMask using version 3.2 of the vgmplayer thats floating around.
  • DefleMask 9e PCM 439,947 hz
    DefleMask 9e FM 443,066 hz
Fusion 3.64 (super hq) PCM 437,063 hz
Fusion 3.64 (super hq) FM 442,997 hz
Mega Drive PAL PCM 425,532 hz
Mega Drive PAL FM 438,789 hz
    DefleMask 9e difference 0,12 cent
Fusion 3.64 (super hq) difference 0,23 cent
Mega Drive PAL difference 0,53 cent
So DefleMask plays the files differently than emulator and real machine. A combination of pcm and fm that sounds in tune in deflemask wont do so on a real machine (at least if its PAL).
Again I also tried using 60hz mode on the PAL machine, but as expected it doesn't change anything. I would be very interested if the vgm player works more acurately on a ntsc machine, so if someone could provide a recording of a ntsc model 1 I would be very thankful. Here's the rom: http://www.mediafire.com/download/i9k9s ... _vgm32.bin

As usually troubles with PCM :)
Thanks! For test and recording. You can always alter sample and it will be with detune in DefleMask, but fine on real HW.

Edit: I have no idea why Chrome on my iPad is double posting, I disabled the "Reduce Data Usage" option that i thought was causing it. Delete or ignore this post pls.

I can unfortunately test only 2MB ROMs with my SMD setup. I do have a non-TMSS Genesis 1 with EXT port, but I don't know exactly which revision it is. Only option I have would be to chop the ROM at 2MB and I'd rather not do so if I'm recording it.

That does mean I can record the second ROM you linked to, however :)

I tried playing this back on my custom player, and all the short waits and small PCM writes totally brought my little microcontroller to a screeching halt. You're really working the PCM like a dog with this song!
