MD Coding compo (Ideas / Feasability)

Post by Fonzie » Sat Jun 29, 2013 3:41 pm

Hi There!

Do you think there is room for a MD coding compo?
The last "big" one, I think, was @ the old "devega" website, unless I missed some since. Not sure anyone will participate to the Cergy compo either. But if it was a MD-only compo?

Would enough people get in?
If so, what kind of deadlines given? 6months? A year?
What could be the prizes, enough motivating?
What kind of compo, a theme?

Feel free to write down your ideas. It would be great to have a big compo with entries showing all the latest technical finds!

Take care,
Fonzie

I've noticed a few more people getting into SGDK lately, so maybe they'd be interested. It could be motivational.

A year would be too much, I think. Three months could be okay, but I guess it depends what kind of requirements the compo has. A full game could take too long, but personally I'd rather see games than demos.

As for prizes, I donno. Personally, I'd go for modded hardware. I really want an s-video 32x :) If component ones don't exist :)

How were the previous compos handled for deadlines, prizes, rules?

I think it's a nice idea too :)
A year is too much, 3/4 months could be nice...
Also i would not limit to a game, personally i prefer concept / demo than game which involve more "finish" time, anyway that could be an "open theme".

I think it would be a good idea, and I also agree that 3/4 months would be ideal. Let's see what people will cook up! :)

Ok, so sorta short timelapse.

Back in devega times, we had like 10-12 entries I recall. Prizes, I don't recall any. Maybe was 50 bucks. Is monetary price good or bad you think? Modded HW is good too, indeed.

Is BasicEgaZorg community still active? I don't have news from Devster for a while now.

Admittedly, Sega Genesis development is a little obscure. It could help if people outside SpritesMind could participate. Maybe folks on Sega16/Assembler/NesDev might be interested, too.

The compo could also pimp the SGDK. People would be more likely to participate if they knew there are good development tools available.

What about segaretro.org, zophar.net, eidolons-inn.net, romhacking.net, and forums about old game roms? I think we can find there (and on these sites listed by djcouchycouch) many people interested in MD coding compo. :)

It depends entirely on what you're comparing it to. Arguably, the MegaDrive scene has more going for it than SNES and NES combined. Sure, in sheer numbers, NES probably wins, but as far as quality is concerned, MegaDrive rocks the scene. Hard. I might be a bit biased, since it's my favorite 16-bit platform, but there's no denying that MegaDrive scene has some serious talent.

Organizing a retro coding compo is tough in general. I remember Neo Flash organized it annually, and accepted entries for all retro platforms supported by their products. Even with such broad possibilities, it didn't attract enough attention to keep going.

But! I'd still like to see some sort of MegaDrive compo take place, just to keep people motivated. This might be an opportunity for some to return to some unfinished projects. Any tech demo or proof of concept would do, so why not show and share your work? And if you're aiming for the stars, there's that Titus the Fox game waiting to be ported. Haha.

I doubt you'll see Genny demos on sonic retro if you read this one ;)
