In assembly or C?

I still wonder how to pull off those kinds of effects with SGDK. I haven't really investigated, though.

do you think the tearing at the top is from vdp fifo delay? I write the vsram every h-blank and reset my counters during h-blank. Why the tear?

It's called a Twister, and it's pretty damn awesome :O

Also, the delay at the top is because you set HINT value to 1. You need to set it to 0, reg 0x8A
