Cannot format internal memory

Post by sekklow » Tue Jan 04, 2011 11:10 am

Hi,
My Mega CD (1) now refuses to load games that use the internal memory. When attempting to format the internal memory from the options screen, I get 'CANNOT FORMAT' and a beep.
I've tried leaving the unit off, and also disconnecting the lithium battery inside to see if that helps but unfortunately not!

Any ideas?

I had this problem when I replaced the power regulator for better one but did not correctly calculate the external parts, and got 4V power supply... this made the battery circuit switch back up RAM to battery operation and write protect it...

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I have the same issue, again caused by an incorrect power supply.

You mentioned that the battery circuit switched the RAM to battery operation and write protected itself. How did you fix this?

I also as a precaution left the MegaCD on overnight to make sure the battery was fully charged.

In my case I replaced the voltage regulator for a better one. You would need a better PSU if it does less than 1A and 9V.

The battery may be dead altogether. My MCD2 battery could not keep any kind of charge.

What PSU are you using ? MD1/SMS/MCD or some alternative ?

I am using a Megadrive 1 PSU.

I may go to the electronics store this weekend and buy a replacement battery. Is it the CR2018? (I will check when I get home)

IT is a BR type battery in there. CR are not rechargeable, BR is. MD1 brick should be good enough as that is what I use for my MCD
