I don't think a Retrogen type device is all that wacky.
Someone should make a SuperGun like device that plugs into the cartridge port and allows you to attach your Jamma board and just use the NeoGeo for the peripherals.
WAIT.. I get it. Neo Geo ON the 32x.
Well, can't an emulator be made? The Genesis + 32x has enough processors to do it, right?

Sounds promising. That does sound better... rather than go through a big map that is probably half empty, just have more linked sprites. You also avoid having to deal with scrolling and all that other stuff.ob1 wrote:Allll right.
I should'n have done any teasing.
I'm still working on sprites for the 32X, and have found that using a NeoGeo approach (everything is a sprite) would work much better thant the tile way.
So, I eventually will finish my NeoGeo-ish sprite engine, and it will be called NeoGeo32X.

I talked with someone else about that somewhere... forget where...slobu wrote:I'll keep my crazy 32x talk in this thread..
What would be involved to make the 32x a stand-alone system? You'd lose the Genesis background layer. What else would need retooling?
You need a little base to plug the 32X into that turns on the 32X, and provides video timing signals and controller ports. It could probably be done with a single CPLD.
I'd probably also have a register that allowed you to change the color output by the base for the "Genesis BG layer" - if you did it right, you could use DMA in the Slave SH2 to change it on the fly to give another usable layer. At the very least you could change it on each line to give a background gradient for sky/ground effects.
I told the other guy the 32X should have come with such a base as it wouldn't add $10 to the price, and would have allowed the 32X to be sold as a stand-alone console as well as a add-on.
My port of Wolf3D only uses the Genesis side for controllers and read/write the sram. So it's an example of what could have been done by a stand-alone 32X.
