MD/Genny audio comparsions

I'm wondering how different MDs, Gennies, and compatibles sound. I've done recordings from my MD2, MD1 and Zebbe's Nomad.

Zebbe's (from Sega-16) Nomad (repaired) :
http://www.hot.ee/tmeeco3/NOMAD.OGG

MD1, early model, no TMSS, board VA4, Signetics 68K :
http://www.hot.ee/tmeeco3/MD1EARLY.OGG
I have one with Motorola 68K of the same kind and it sounds identical.

MD2, early model, board VA1, modded audio circuit :
http://www.hot.ee/tmeeco3/MD2CCAM.OGG
Before audio mod, my MD2 sounded just like Nomad, but PSG was more quiet.

Here's a ROM you'll use for recording :
http://www.hot.ee/tmeeco3/TESTROM.RAR

Only things I've done with the recordings are :
* Removing line noise (I have 6 meter long cables which are not too high quality)
* Putting a fade out in the end.

All files are recorded at as high volume as possible but so that the peaks will never be clipped.

I hope to hear the sound of all systems. I'm sure that early non TMSS MDs/Gennies will sound best in unmodded state.

I guess I have more luck here, since I believe many of you have flashcarts.

And I would not like to hear any comments from Evildragon until he gets a flashcart. Sorry...

It's interesting. I always thought the MD2 would sound horrible, but now that that I've did comparisions with my new X'Eye and my Genesis/MD1, I have to say that it does sound similar to your tests. So, the X'Eye does sound great but still not as impressive as the MD1.

Next I'll have to test my Nomad.

Can you please post some recordings (I hope you can record things) ? I'm REALLY interested in hearing the sound of anything I don't have. MD2(and all others with integrated YM2612) does the best the best sound after my sound mod. But that mod is pretty pain, but its worth it.

I will post some recordings but don't expect anything soon.

According to my tests, MD1 does have the best sound quality; but the difference isn't as huge as I expected.

In your recordings though, MD1 does sound kinda distorted...

Here are my recordings using my Model 1 Genny and my X'Eye:
http://www.dcevolution.netfirms.com/dsd ... rdings.rar

The result is comparable to your recordings: With the Model 1 Genesis it doesn't sound as good as when recorded with the X'Eye or other Model 2 based hardware.

- But here's the interesting thing: Using the exactly same hardware, but a different ROM for testing, you will hear that the Model 1 MD/Genny does sound MUCH better than the Model 2 MD/G:

Koshiro's Go Straight (Beatmix) from BK2, recorded with my Genesis via its heaphone out:
http://www.dcevolution.netfirms.com/dsd ... ix_TRS.rar

The same track recorded with my X'Eye via its RCA/Cinch out:
http://www.dcevolution.netfirms.com/dsd ... ix_RCA.rar

Koshiro's Never Return Alive from BK2, recorded with my Genesis via its headphone out:
http://www.dcevolution.netfirms.com/dsd ... ve_TRS.rar

The same track recorded with my X'Eye via its RCA/Cinch out:
http://www.dcevolution.netfirms.com/dsd ... ve_RCA.rar

The X'Eye also does have a headphones out but the sound quality is identical to that of its RCA / Cinch out.

Edit1 - Here's a recording of Never Return Alive via a Nomad's headphone out which I downloaded from somewhere:
http://www.dcevolution.netfirms.com/dsd ... _Alive.rar

Edit2 - ...and here's my recording of Jesper Kyd's Datarum from Red Zone:
http://www.dcevolution.netfirms.com/dsd ... um_TRS.rar

Sadly it doesn't sound anywhere as good as your recording from here:

- Can you upload a recording of the Go Straight Beatmix from Streets of Rage 2 using your modified MD2 for me ?

THANKS FOR THE RECORDING !!! :D I'll listen the recordings when I get home.

Yes, I can do a recording of that song using my MD2, I'm pretty sure it will sound better. But unmodified MD2 sucks like Nomad would.

EDIT : Here's the sample of that SoR2/BK2 song form my MD2 :
http://www.hot.ee/tmeeco3/MD2CCAM2.OGG

What version mobo your Genny has ? I've heard that the later the model, the worse sound they have.

Xeye's PSG sounds great, but YM2612 sounds little too filtered (removing few caps might help, like it would in DC (and I have one other method to get better sound out of DC too)).

I am not sure how NOMAD compares with a MD2. I remember it sounds MUCH better. - I will record some songs with my NOMAD soon :)

Thanks a lot. And, yeah, it does sound great! I am still pretty happy with my Genny recordings but this sounds very impressive!

- Could you also record "Never Return Alive" ? -- I would be very interested to hear it as with X'Eye it doesn't sound anywhere near its MD1 original.

I will try to record Golden Axe next. "Death Adder" I already recorded and it sounds pretty distorted. I will upload it for you.

- It would be nice if you could upload a recording of that track from your modified MD2 machine.

That's very possible.

- I got no idea what mobo my Genesis has and I am not opening it any time soon (The guy who sent it too me said it's hard to get it back together because of the overclocking and the region mods).

But its model number is 1601 and its serial number is 32V00960, if that is of any help to you.

What song number is "Never return Alive" ? Same for "Death Adder" (I don't know the song names). I'm low on webspace too....

Is there this "High Definition Graphics, Stereo Sound" written on your MD ? and does it have TMSS ?

You could use www.zshare.net for smaller uploads like .ogg.

- My Genesis has "HIGH DEFINITION GRAPHICS" written on top of the "drive"s circle. It even has the EXT. port on its back.

"Never Return Alive" is BGM #2, the SOR2 boss track; "Death Adder" is listed as such in Golden Axe's soundtest.

I am gonna upload my recording of Death Adder for you; it sounds similar to the version from Beep! - Mega Drive Best Selection:

I tried my Genny 2 which I hadn't used in years.

And oh.......my.......god.. It's audio is horrible! I tried using Sega CD to play music CDs through it, and all my CD's sounded like crap through it..

(Where I use my Genesis 1 for music CD's, and they sound fairly great.)

MD2 needs heavy modding before its audio becomes great... I've yet to get a MCD and 32X to add these to my audio mod (anyone willing to donate broken 32X and/or MCD ?).

Sega CD won't need a mod, but the 32X might.

Thing is, they use the Genesis for the mixing, so the Genesis mods may already fix them.

Sega CD is the only system that has a mixer, but it's a good mixer..
