YM2612 clock stopping

Post by TmEE co.(TM) » Thu Oct 11, 2018 3:03 am

When you stop the clock of YM2612 it needs to settle in Low state or the chip will get burning hot within 10 seconds or so. I have a project where the clock can be stopped and I noticed the chip getting unusually hot in very short amount of time when the clock was stopped in High state.

Interesting stuff. Did you test TA07 and PCS97 clones too?

I only have SE-95 clone chips to test, I haven't tried it though.

Weird, but not unprecedented - the 6502 could be stopped by holding the clock high. That's how the Atari 8-bit computers worked since the RDY line didn't work on read, only write. When the ANTIC needed the bus, it would assert a signal that went to the clocking circuit that caused the 6502 clock to be held high.

In the case of holding it low, the 6502 didn't get hot, the registers became invalid.
