Idea for a nice community project

I recently came across this page and the idea of making a Guitar Hero-style game for the Genesis intrigues me. However, I'd like to see some cooperative Genesis coding, and I think a project like this might be able to motivate us to get in touch with that guy, see if he'll work with us and let us use his adapter design as a base for a Genesis 6-button version rather than the more simple Atari-style interface, and make a quite nice GH clone for the Genesis.
Any ideas? Is this a good idea, or is it destined for failure? Constructive criticism is welcomed.
For those who aren't familiar with it, Guitar Hero is a series of guitar-based video games using a guitar-like controller with five fret buttons, a strum bar that works both up and down, a whammy bar, a tilt sensor (for triggering "Star Power"), and select and start. It's quite fun, and I think it would be awesome on the Genesis (also, if we release a good game, then it's bound to get spread around the internet, hell we might even suffer the digg effect).
