YM2608 tracker and question?

Post by CosmoBuggi » Sun Aug 12, 2012 11:40 pm

Sorry to bother about this again, but i wanted to ask. How possible and how easy would it be to make a YM2608 chip considering it is very similar to the YM2612, which has already been made? Also, doesn't it have more than one ADPCM sampler channels or am i mixing it up with something? If so, how easy would such a tracker be to make if it is largely the YM2612 with an ADPCM channel as well as possibly more than just one of those channels? Answers would be appreciated. And please note i am not demanding this be made, i am just curious of how possible and/or easy this would be. Thanks. :)

YM2608 is YM2612 + AY + 6x fixed drum sounds + 1x ADPCM channel.
A bit more capable than MD, but not too different.

Yeah, that's what i pretty much figured. But what does 6 drum sounds mean? Does that mean more than one drum samples or just samples in general can be used? That wouldn't surprise me because i think the PC-88 used that chip. Listening to Misty Blue, it seems more than one sample is being used, such as drum samples as well as hat samples and even a few other ones playing, so that would make sense. :P Same with Sega arcade games, such as space harrier. Am i right?

There is 6x samples built into the YM2608 which cannot be changed. They can all be played at once though which gives an edge but sound themselves are always same stuff.
Sega boards used a dedicated sampler chip in most cases.

Ah, ok. Well, that's interesting and certainly not something i wold have expected. Odd, but more than one sample being played at once is certainly an interesting feature for an old Yamaha chip. :P
