scan docs

Post by KanedaFr » Thu Mar 15, 2007 8:35 am

Hello!

I have several docs to scan (about the genny of course)
What is the best ?
JPEG at 150dpi ? 300 dpi ?
PDF ?
GIF/PNG/others ?

I know OCR is better but I don't think I'll find the time to check (else someone want to OCR the files)

Resolution is about your support.
Your usual screen displays at 100ppp.
A good printing quality is about 300ppp.

Then, you consider export.
TIFF or BMP is best, since it's non destructive.
JPEG achieves good compresison, but is destructive. Avoid compression rate under 85% (setting available on PaintShop Pro and Photoshop).
GIF has only 256 colors, with a non-destructive algorithm.
PNG seems quite good, although not very usual.
PDF won't be very usefull unless you go for OCR.

I'd consider 150ppp and JPEG output.

And if you have time and will, OCR-it !!!

You might also try PNG, it gives pretty good compression and is also lossless. 300dpi is awesome (if not too much  )
Mida sa loed ? Nagunii aru ei saa ;)

How about djvu, which is specifically designed for the job? For free software djvu utilities, see DjVuLibre project page.
