I must admit I'm paying a pixel artist to do portraits and items for the game. I'm no good at pixel art unfortunately! I'm not so bad at GUIs though!

I don't fully understand the magic behind this. Are you essentially having to up-scale the image by doubling the horizontal rows due to the limitations of DMA per line?
