Re: VDP 128Kb Extended VRAM mode

This reminds me, the recent Megadrive Collected Works has had an interview with the Megadrive hardware designer, Masami Ishikawa, where he talks a bit about the 128Kb VRAM mode. Apparently it was added as an experiment to significantly increase performance, but in the end it unfortunately didn't. Wh...

Re: Decapping more Genesis chips

On the topic of chips with internal ROMs, the DCC possibly has one as well. Although that chip only handled DRAM and Boot ROM access, so it's not that interesting. It got the task of multiplexing digital audio as well on later models.

Re: Decapping more Genesis chips

Well, I was mostly mentioning what I was told by other developers. MAMEDEV is always crying about not having info on VDP1 timings. The SCSP DSP, I don't have much documents on that, but according to Steve there are docs by Yamaha about the SCSP which I'd assume include the DSP as well. EDIT: nope, w...

Re: Decapping more Genesis chips

Of course, if you are able to do "lots" of chips, the Saturn has plenty to do: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9d/Sega-Saturn-Motherboard.jpg One of the chips here is the YMF292-F, which might even be of interest for you in your project. On that topic, I have a bunch of broken satu...

Re: Questions about emulating different Genesis models

Oh, I have one of those. Pretty low serial too, 88M 01190. I collect odd hardware for testing too, but I don't have the knowledge to make any, but superficial tests on it, so a test app would be welcome.

Re: Questions about emulating different Genesis models

Perhaps I am being presumptuous here, but there should be a test program that looks for all these details that differ between hardware. Sure, there are a million and one things to test, but it could start with implementing the known differences, and give back numbers that could be used to implement ...

Sorry, very busy the last few days. I've made some fixes to the joystick handling code that'll be part of the next release. I'll have another look at the code and see if I can see any other problems. I don'thave a joystick or ganepad to test on so it makes it a bit hard to verify. If you have acces...

You know, I did actually add support for this, and I was banging my head against the wall as to why this wasn't working, and then when I did hardware tests, I found that on the systems I tested on at least, the character also wasn't random on the hardware either. Never diagnosed past that. It'd be ...

Everything else gets recreated by any burner. Nemesis wants to do this to rip Mega Laserdiscs - what burners can and cannot burn do not matter here. Also I think this depends on burners, both hardware and software. The subcodes used for CD+G are burnable for sure, at the very least. Not sure about ...

I remember the kickstarter. I was just wondering a few days ago if it was out yet. Those production details will be very interesting, it looks like this won't be another one of those "collected facts from Wikipedia" type of deals (which is the reason why I'm not buying books anymore).

The serial number should make it possible to identify the hardware inside but it just so happens that the Megadrive did not follow the standard Sega serial numbers until later. Megadrive 2 did, but it either did not do it consistently, or I just don't have enough test cases. Ok, just cracked my MD3 ...

The last time I remember such a thing was when they released that Sega Ages compilation of, uh, Fantasy Zone I think. One of those SMS-only sequels. They rebuilt it to run on the original arcade hardware... to the point that you could burn the game data on eproms and it actually really ran on the ha...
