Mottzilla, I am sorry that the discussion always comes back to this "better" "best" "worst" comparison. But isn't that part of the presumption? If system X can do it better, then in theory it should do it more often - no? So, you can't really get away from the better/best part of the comparison, un...

Mottzilla, I am sorry that the discussion always comes back to this "better" "best" "worst" comparison. The fact is no SNES game does this many "scrolls." Additionally, the Genesis does what the SNES does not in this case *apparently* because the VDP handles it locally (with a handful of simple regi...

As I know you only have plane A & B. No more. On MD you can scroll each X axis line & each Y axis 8 lines, so... you can have up to 240*320/8*2 scrolls... in theory, of course. As Ketsuban says, we have to differentiate between two types of scrolls, ones which involve different planes and others in...

I honestly don't know why the discussion comes back to qualifiers like "better." Obviously more RAM of every kind would have allowed for more technical backgrounds and that would have been "better." I don't need to compare methods to say whether the VDP supports something natively. My premise is sim...

I am using the term independently scrolling to bridge the gap between people outside of these forums that would need "parallax" or "line scrolling" explained to them every time. I selected the term because on the screen, in the games I am talking about, these background segments, or "scrolls", move ...

Tom, are you actually trolling me? If you don't want to contribute to the topic, start your own please. There is one like you in every technical forum. You can't handle being wrong about anything, so you dodge the topic every time you are proven wrong (eg. scrolling is aesthetically unpleasing). The...

That Super Scope video only shows four to five independent layers. I have seen the same in UN Squadron, I think, and I have seen five in Valis IV (forced scrolling cloud layers). All of these are well within the SNES's standard background capabilities. Whereas scenes such as those created by the gam...

Shiru, Thanks again for your responses. Is there any measurable aspect to how the MD's VDP centric approach affects CPU usage, versus the "traditional" approach? It all sounds to me like a matter of how much time a programmer wanted to spend implementing the scrolling effects. The Genesis/MD approac...

I think I understand the effect, but on the MD/Genesis is it handled in the VDP, or by the 68000? If it is handled by the VDP it is a unique hard coded effect that developers would have been inclined to use. The documentation, and your first post, implies that the processing was handled by the VDP. ...

I would love to know which games you are referring to specifically, so I can test them. Certain games' background displays, like Gunstar Heroes, Ranger X or Red Zone, are a complete mystery to me. But games like Shinobi III, Sonic 2-3, Streets of Rage 1-2, Lightening Force and others seem to be usin...

Understanding the VDP's scrolling capabilities.

I am perusing through every technical document I can find for the Genesis presently. I thought that TmEE co. had told me a couple of years ago that the Genesis/MD VDP had specific scrolling capabilities within its own processing ability (read: not CPU intensive). In researching the Genesis VDP I hav...

Very good! I'll spend some more time playing it today, but I love this style of game. Joust is one of my all time favorites. Sounds good to me. I'll try to get some NES shots up in the next week. Do you have any specific games/screens you'd like to see?

Any recommendations you have I'd love to hear. I'll keep the original MPEG-2 files if we need more screenshots for any reason. I did test taking screenshots straight from the capture card display and got the same results. I don't have the resources to try any more capture card solutions right now, a...

Okay, now that I have checked and double checked and then checked some more. Here is the data from my sample study on Composite video outputs of the Genesis and SNES using BT&DD. This only tests the reliability of the color counts in any given identical screenshots taken from different frames of the...
