I really doubt that resampling imprecision could cause us to play a pure tone instead of the white noise type sound that Kega produces. I guess I'll keep looking :)

YM2612: Streets of Rage 2 character select and punch sounds

I got this report recently that the character select and punch in the air sounds are quite different between MAME's 2612 and Kega or a real Megadrive of indeterminate version. (The attached .oggs certainly indicate *something* is awry). He later said it's also correct in the year-old Windows build o...

I can explain the MAME part of this: MAME flushes out all the audio buffers once per video frame (59.97 Hz for NTSC). This means that the intermediate buffers need to be large enough to hold all the samples a chip can generate in 1 frame (1/59.97th of a second for NTSC) plus maybe a little slop in c...

MAME will resample everything to 44100...even if you set sample rate to something higher (like 48000).
No, it resamples to whatever rate you set it to. I run MAME at 48 kHz (since that's the native rate of my Audigy 2) and it works fine.

That's fine. I wasn't clear if it was a problem in the MAME code or not.

MAME 0.128u2 will be up to date with r157 of GenPlus-GX, including removing that "fix". Any ideas on the Battletech thing?

There already is a ripped format and a proper plugin - it's called .vgm. The Project 2612 guys have done a fantastic job with the vgm rips, and it's unlikely you'll hear any difference between a vgm and actually running the driver in M1, assuming the vgm plugin has all the latest YM2612 fixes from t...

LN: well, this board is about the Genesis/MD, so the filters on the back end do matter. (If schematics exist, they'd probably be fairly easy to hook up in MAME with the discrete audio subsystem). I can't think of any cases where the filter would somehow give Nemesis false results anyway. I do agree ...

Snake: he used a custom ISA card that was reconfigured for each chip under test. One reason he doesn't work on it now is that he doesn't actively use an ISA machine anymore. And yes, I wouldn't mind some (more modern) way to hook up real Yamaha chips to a PC and then drive them from a VST or somethi...

Yup. He did all his OPN reverse-engineering on the 2203 AFAIK so some details have turned out a bit different, but in general the areas where MAME's emulation wasn't right were things he already knew but didn't have a test case for (the abuse of PEG overflow that several GEMS games do is certainly s...

Yeah, I've backported Eke's fixes from up to genplus-gx's fm.c rev 157 but MAME's in lockdown for 0.128 final right now so I can't submit it yet. I'm looking forward to the fixes for Battletech to appear in the meantime :) And once everything's caught up I'll post a new M1 with the latest. Jarek's e...

Honestly, one of the big problems with MAME's FM has been that it's not well documented. If you'd like to add comments explaining how it works we'd be more than happy to include them.

Has anyone looked into the proper FM/DAC balance yet? In current MAME the DAC seems to be too loud (I think we just mix the written sample value directly into the chip's output) but I'd love to have a tested value to attenuate it by.

Thanks for the tip, Eke. I'll pick that fix up. Incidentally, submitting those changes woke up Jarek B. I pointed him to this thread so hopefully he'll decide to work with you guys and we can get OPN totally perfect. In the meantime at least it sounds like Haze is going to work on HazeMD again now t...
